For five days of the year, Glastonbury becomes the one of the largest cities in the south, with up to 200,000 revellers pouring through the gates. The festival's ethos of demonstrating ways to support climate change efforts and 'leaving no trace' extends to the dedication of an entire field to the environmental campaigners, Greenpeace.
In 2015, the theme for the Greenpeace field was based on their campaign to help reduce overfishing globally, and the field became the watery backdrop to explain the issues involved. The test? To make something educational AND fun.
Alongside a passionate team of volunteers, builders and set designers, work included the design and coordination of the whole field, including a cafe, showers and skate ramp, and the design and construction of two major structures within the field, the Super Trawler, and the Big Fish. The Super Trawler housed a stage which played out across the field during the day, and reversed to play into the Engine Room Bar at night. Festival-goers could clamber through the bowels of the ship, exploring the experience of a captured and discarded fish, slithering through a sound and light installation, up the wiggle stair and hurtling down the By-Catch slide. Or simply enjoy a cocktail on the top deck overlooking the Greenpeace Field.
